The Golf d’Arcangues was created in the 1990s by two brothers, Guy et Jean d’Arcangues, on farm land in their family from the XII° century.
This is a classic par-72, designed by the famous golf architect Ronald Fream, with the front and back nines starting and finishing next to the Club House. It is a true golfing challenge, comprising 10 par-4s, 4 par-3s and 4 par-5s.
Winding through century-old oak trees and around the Château d’Arcangues, the golf course offers spectacular views over the Basque Country and the lower Pyrénées before returning to the superb Club House with its terrace shaded by plane trees, a fine testimony to the « etxe », the traditional basque farmhouse.
Golf and Biodiversity
In May 2023, the Arcangues Golf Club joined the French Golf Federation's (FFGolf) "Golf for Biodiversity" program and was awarded the Bronze Label. The club embraced this environmental approach and integrated biodiversity and water management considerations. 70% of the course is left unirrigated, and the unmaintained rough areas have been expanded to benefit biodiversity. This provides a true breeding ground for numerous insect and flower species.
In terms of water management, the Arcangues Golf Course was a pioneer. It was designed in 1991 with hillside reservoirs that allow for the collection of rainwater, drainage water as well as all water from the roofs of the buildings located around the Clubhouse; no withdrawals are made from the water table.
